Do not submerge any part of the housing or power cord in water or any other liquid. Wash each in warm soapy water. Rinse and dry thoroughly. This should be done after every few cups are brewed. Wash each in warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Do not dry the interior of the water tank or lid. Lint can be left behind and get in the water if this is done. Dry the outside thoroughly and replace into the brewer. This will help in purging out any coffee grounds that may be in the brew head. Slide the end of the paperclip up into the three holes located around the puncture needle on the top of the brew chamber. When all three have been cleared, close the brew head and run another purge brew to clear out any coffee grounds that may have been loosened from the needle. The resin filter should be replaced every two months. During that replacement time, the filter holder should be cleaned as well. Wash the upper holder and the lower holder in warm soapy water. If you choose to install the Water Filter, replace the Charcoal Filter every 2 months or 60 tank refills. We suggest not installing the Water Filter if using filtered water, or if you choose not to replace the Charcoal Filter as recommended, as the filter may clog and affect the smell and taste of the water. If you choose not to install the Water Filter, start the One Time Priming Process. If you choose to install the Water Filter, follow these steps: 1. Remove the Water Tank from the Brewer by gripping the handle located on the left side of the Water Tank, then lift upwards. 2. Remove the Water Tank Lid. Rinse the Water Tank with fresh water and replace back onto the Brewer. 3. Remove the Upper and Lower Filter Holder and Charcoal Filter from the polybag. Unwrap the Charcoal Filter from its protective plastic. 4. Soak the Charcoal Filter for 5 minutes then rinse for 30 seconds. 5. Insert the Charcoal Filter into the Upper Filter Holder, then attach the Lower Filter Holder so it locks into place. 7. Set the date dial on the Upper Filter Holder 2 months ahead. Press and release the Power Switch located on the lower back, right side of the Brewer. The Power Switch is spring loaded and will return to its original position. 4. The reason I picked this model is that it's nice looking and I had good luck with other Breville products I own. I also bought it as a factory refurb, so it was a great value. It has been brewing multiple cups of coffee for our household for over 10 years. I have had to clean out the needle once or twice. Other than that, it has been trouble free. Maybe that has helped. But whatever the reason, it has served us long and well and it continues to do so. It is a shame it appears to be discontinued.I should have written a review on it a long time ago now but now is as good of time as any. I would easily purchase this same unit again if I ever thought it would fail me. I see a lot of people that had issues but there is a key to using any coffee pot that most people simply just don't bother to consider. You cannot use tap water. You cannot use softened tap water. You only ever use distilled water in any of these types of coffee makers if you want them to last. Mine works flawlessly, operates with minimal noise, heats quickly, and makes the perfect cup of coffee every time. Buy the filters regardless if you use distilled water or not. The filters will not stop hard water build up. Buy a Waterwise 9000 or something similar so that you always have fresh distilled water on hand and you will have this beautiful unit on your counter for years. Mine travels full time in my RV and has never had a drop of anything but distilled water go through it. For all the shaking and bumps on the road it operates perfectly.The first lasted about 3 years and was replaced (customer service was a little hard to deal with) with a refurbished machine which lasted another 3 years. That one finally stopped pumping water and then started leaking. I will offer you some advice: if the machine starts pumping out the coffee slowly, take a small wire and poke it up inside sharp outlet that punctures the Kcup. It sometimes gets clogged. I tried everything to fix mine but couldn't. Just replaced it with current machine. These things are handy if you are the only coffee drinker in the home, or if everybody likes different flavors of coffee. The Kcups have gotten so expensive and the machines are quite expensive for how long they last. We also use ours for heating water quickly for warming baby bottles and that has been very convenient. Beautiful machine that makes a good cup of coffee.I now have experience with both and can tell you unequivocally that the Breville is the better machine. I started a year ago with the top-of-the-line Keurig. It made an OK cup of coffee and got my family hooked on the single-cup concept. We cannot agree on what makes a good cup of coffee, so with the Keurig, we could each select our own. And, we could have fresh coffee, tea or iced beverage any time of day with no hassle. Before long, I had an entire cupboard dedicated to K-cups. There were two problems: The coffee was OK but not great -- it lacked complexity and depth. You could get a strong cup of coffee by selecting the strongest roasts, but that produced a harsh coffee without any nuance. That is not a satisying cup of coffee. But worse, the stupid machine kept breaking down. It seemed to get confused and would freeze up. Before long, that stopped being effective and I could find nothing to correct the problem. I went through three Keurigs in less than one year. It was the same problem every time. Amazon was great and stood behind the machine, shipping me new ones. But with the warranty about to expire and the machine, once again, not working, I bit the bullet and went for the much more expensive Breville. It's a great looking machine. It heats the water hotter and more consistently than the Keurig, which I realized immediately was the reason the Keurig coffee was only fair, not great. So the Breville does indeed produce a much better cup of coffee. Each of the Keurig coffeemakers starting acting flaky within three months, so I'm taking this as a good sign and, with fingers crossed, believe that this will prove to be a reliable machine. I've spoken with friends who have used Keurig for years without problems. I don't know why I have had such lousy luck with them. But I also have friends who have used both the Breville and the Keurig and, among those users, we all agree the Breville makes better coffee. FOLLOW-UP It's been over 18 months and the Breville is still working fine.The second has been in daily use at the medium sized office for 3 years without any issues. I also notice it heats up in half the time as the previous version. They still need to figure out a way to slow down the brew so you can get properly made coffee. I use the 4oz twice with Peets coffee with about a 30 second wait in between to open up or soak the grounds for better extraction without bitterness. So these are big and much needed improvements however this version splatters a lot more and the fit and finish are slightly lower. Specifically they used a slight more shiny finish that shows fingerprints and doesn't match the married together silver plastic tank. Also the parts do not fit flush together and is sort of annoying for this price level product. Overall the Quiet Pump, the small cup size and the faster start up time are big improvements. Nice product a little back step in quality and finish.Bought this before KEURIG decided to get greedy and put scan readers into their machines. Am very happy I did so as it is attractive, a little less noisy than the Keurig, makes a concentrated HOT iced coffee brew that you chill by pouring into glass with ice (the real reason I bought it and now Keurig has this feature) and multiple pourings from cup to mug sized. The limitation of these coffee makers is that one Kcup can't possibly deliver the same coffee taste when 6, 8, 10 or 12 oz of water is poured through one coffee Kcup, so the brand of KCup purchased is very important. Few Kcups are up to the 12 oz serving, I find I will often use two Kcups to get a large mug or travel mug of coffee using two 8 oz settings. The iced coffee setting works well but provides a small glass of iced coffee, if you are used to Starbucks Venti sized drinks you will be again using two or three Kcups to get the same result. Bottom line, a cup of Kcup coffee is long on convenience and short on perfection, much like frozen french fries you make at home versus the kind a professional kitchen produces. It's okay, but weekends you will likely want to give in to your coffee urgings and brew a real pot. In short, the five stars reflect the quality of Breville's machine as a good kcup brewer, but not the quality of the coffee kcup brewers make.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. I had three Keurig Platinums drop dead, (three families) and one Cuisinart. While it is, for the most part, what I have cometo expect from BREVILLE, I have three problems: First the price. No new technology, no new materials. In fact, there isn't a carafe, which traditional coffee makers have to supply, so the price should at least be that much lower. As if this design flaw wasn't bad enough, I tested mine and it never reaches even 170 degrees F!!!! Finally, becasue the coffeemaker is designed to accommidate a glass for lattes or iced-tea, when you use a coffee cup (after all, this IS a coffee maker), which is several inches shorter and therefore farther away from the brewing head, the coffee splashes out all over the cup and the machine. You can set your own default cup size, or select any other cup size and not lose your default setting. It can be programmed to turn on and off at set times. When the water tank is low a blue light flashes and the readout will tell you when to refill the tank. It will also let you know when it's heating the water. After you've brewed a cup of coffee, don't raise the head until it finishes drawing water from the tank into the reservoir. One of the areas in which there can be troubles is with the water tank.To avoid that, just use another container to refill it. In my experience it's an excellent purchase.Please try again later. I am now afraid to purchase another, far less expensive Keurig product. I liked the appearance of the machine, but that is all that it is good for. It looks good. Otherwise the pump quit working a few weeks after its first use. I used it only once, occasionally twice a day. That's it. Just like the others' reviews. Pay attention. I didn't. Learn from me. It worked well for about 18 months, but does not make a full cup any more. I'm the only coffee drinker in the house and while it sees occasional increased use when we have guests it is so far from seeing hard use. We use filtered water, clean it regularly, and follow the descaling instructions (even though I'd say there's no evidence of scaling). Searched online and I've found many others have similar issues. It appears that the pump's reliability lasts about 1 minute past the warranty and that's it. Too much money to justify buying another, but I will continue to use it until it dies completely. I did not feel it was necessary because we already had a standard coffee maker, but it was the only thing he wanted. Anyway, now I'm the one who uses it more than he does. I use it mainly for hot and iced teas. It's quick, simple, and just plain great. There is an automatic timer on it, so that every morning it's ready to start brewing at 5 am. (Even if you turn it off and then back on, it really doesn't take too long to start up.) 30 seconds later you have hot tea or coffee. I don't always use the K-cups with it - I mean I will use it for the hot water, so I can seep any tea I like. There are still a lot of varieties of tea K-cups that I do use. My boyfriend likes his coffee every morning, and this is much more convenient and affordable than going to Starbucks every time. It has already paid for itself. I do recommend this Breville - I haven't had any issues with it. It's still going strong since Dec 2010, and I'm writing this review April 2012.
