Lex M. 1.0 out of 5 stars Contains virtually no information for patients diagnosed with Stage IV, and seems to serve more as an advertisement for the associated clinic than an actual resource manual for the afflicted, their family, friends or caregivers. It is sparse and short, and devotes far too much of what little it contains to self-congratulatory nonsense on behalf of the writer's clinic. It uses atypical diagnostic categories, and is absolutely lousy with, again, what I would consider to be attempts at advertisement rather than advisement. I strongly recommend the latest edition of Dr. Susan Love's book, or a copy of the Mayo Clinic's publication even though it is out of date. None of these provide enough information for the patient diagnosed with Stage IV, rarer forms of the disease or for those readers who are most strongly scientifically inclined and medically experienced but Love's book eapecially will be a bastion of information covering the basic essentials up through a resonable degee of technicality. In addition both Love's book and the Mayo's are far better resources for the various psychological and interpersonal ramifications of diagnosis, both for the patient and their carers. They are fundamental resources I would recommend in a heartbeat to 99 of people finding their lives intimately invaded by that spectre, breast cancer. It was far from the only page in totally illegible condition. I have rarely felt so angry at a book; but to write and publish such low quality insubstantial rubbish as this and charge actual bloody money for it seems to me to cross the line into predation against people made vulnerable by the terror of recent diagnosis. The book is extremely educational and provides the knowledge a patient needs to achieve optimal care working with their medical team. The information provided is based on scientific studies and research. The 6th edition includes the most recent developments in breast cancer care. http://mcsfood.com/images/brookstone-foot-spa-manual.xml
I highly recommended this book. I am a three-year breast cancer survivor. Dr. Link is insightful, intelligent and although clearly a skilled oncologist, writes from a human and intuitive standpoint, making what is a scary diagnosis an easier journey. It describes each kind of breast cancer, different treatment options, nutrition, exercise and the things you should be asking your team. We have recommended this book a few times. It is unfortunate that so many are afflicted with breast cancer, but at least there s a book like this for those newly diagnosed. This was the first to arrive and I believe that it is an excellent and well organized survey of the subject of breast cancer and its diagnosis and treatment. The Mayo Clinic book arrived later and I thought that was good also. The Susan Love book got lost in the mail and it is re-ordered so I can't yet comment. Science is making great stride in breast cancer knowledge diagnosis and treatment and this book is up to date.I found myself reading and re-reading some chapters many evenings. Now I am cancer free after 10 weeks of dealing with surgery and 5 days of intense twice daily VABI radiation. I bought the book so that I can understAnd what the oncologists talk about my condition. Our payment security system encrypts your information during transmission. This book should be issued by your health care professional the day you are diagnosed.I didn't want to be a clueless patient like I had been the first time. I wanted to be armed with the facts when I met with my Oncologist so I could be a part of the decision making. I feel I got the treatments I required because of what I learned by reading Dr. Links book.I found the section on interpreting the pathology report especially helpful, but all of it is helpful in understanding the terminology and techniques that doctors will use in talking about breast cancer, and written in an easy-for-a-layperson-to-understand style. While specific treatments may change, requiring frequent updates of the book and reference to other materials, it's still an invaluable resource for an overview.Wish I had this book immediately following diagnosis. It will guide you to ask the right questions, lead you to informative websites and support groups, and help you understand your disease better than any doctor can explain in a 15 minute appointment. Dr. John Link is brilliant in his writing. Fortunately for me he has offices nearby and I was able to see him for a second opinion. He spent forty minutes of his precious time explaining my diagnosis, treatments, and potential future for a cure. More information and hope than my current oncologist has ever given me. Every breast cancer patient should read this book. This book takes you step by step through your cancer journey, explaining things easily. I highly recommend for anyone newly diagnosed.Well written though and good info.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. John Link, M.D., a pioneer developer of Breastlink Medical Group in Southern California includes the most current medical advice on It is a mystery to us why the female breast is vulnerable to developing cancer. It may have something to do with monthly cycling of glandular cells, yet more than half of breast cancers develop in older women after the breast glands have come to rest. We know that cancer tends to occur in organs with cells that are constantly cycling through cell renewal. The replacement of a cell requires the production of a new set of genes, and this process can lead to mistakes ( mutations ) that the cell is unable to repair. The mistakes can then be repeated, causing a cell to grow according to a new blueprint in a process that is out of control, and this process results in cancer. This edition expands on the breast cancer fundamentals included in previous editions by highlighting new and exciting advances in diagnostic tests, genomic tests and targeted therapies. Throughout the book, Dr. Link skillfully explains complex medical and scientific concepts in a way that is clear and easy to understand. The text includes helpful diagrams, treatment flow charts and practical tools to reinforce topics. The author combines his professional insights with the most recent scientific research in this comprehensive and accessible guide for the management of breast cancer. Chapters 1-4 provide an introduction to breast cancer, advice on how to optimally prepare for treatment, a summary of different types of breast cancer and understanding the pathology report. Chapters 5-10 discuss types of treatment and management for specific types of breast cancer. Chapters 11-15 focus on risk assessment and genetic testing, nutrition and lifestyle, clinical research trials, survivorship and a conclusion. The book includes a helpful resource guide and glossary. A diagnosis of breast cancer can bring fear, feelings of being overwhelmed and anxiety that often result in information seeking. The author encourages people to take the time to learn the latest credible and reliable medical information to make critical treatment decisions. Understanding treatment options is the best way to take control of one’s care, effectively collaborate with one’s healthcare team and achieve the best treatment outcome. Dr. Link states, “The main objective of this book is to educate you about breast cancer and to give you some control over what may now seem like chaos.” (p.7) This chapter discusses cellular processes, DNA mutation, cancer cell reproduction, cancer growth rates (with a helpful diagram) and spread to the lymphatic system and bloodstream. He discusses how to take an organized approach in preparing for treatment, highlights the value of a second opinion and includes a valuable comparison tool for first and second opinion recommendations. This section lists helpful tips for getting the most out of doctor’s appointments. Advanced treatment options are available and depend on the specific subtype of breast cancer. Dr. Link provides an overview of cancer characteristics included on the report (diagnosis, microscopic description, clinical and gross description, grade, estrogen and progesterone receptors, HER2 receptor, Ki-67, and new genomic tests). This information identifies the subtype of breast cancer. The chapter provides a sample pathology report, discusses surgical pathology and closes with a TNM (T-tumor size, N-number of lymph nodes, M-metastasis) staging guide. The objective of local control is to remove the cancer in its entirety.” (p.61). This chapter discusses two main forms of local control: surgery and radiation therapy. Surgical approaches include lumpectomy, mastectomy and wide local excision. Dr. Link also conveys when preoperative (neoadjuvant) systemic treatment is indicated before surgery. The second half of the chapter focuses on the benefits and risks of radiation therapy and its role in preventing local recurrence. There is a section explaining different types of breast reconstruction. He discusses Tamoxifen, ovarian suppression and aromatase inhibitors. The chapter covers decision factors for chemotherapy, adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemotherapy and the side effects of various treatments. Clinical trials that have demonstrated the effectiveness of certain treatments are highlighted. Dr. Link defines DCIS, characteristics of DCIS and presents various treatment options for individuals with different levels of risk. The author examines prognosis, risk of recurrence and treatment options for each subtype. Hormonal therapy is discussed (preoperative and adjuvant settings), types of gene assay assessment for risk of recurrence and the role of chemotherapy. The author emphasizes the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment planning. Clinical trials that have contributed to the development of new treatments are featured. This chapter stresses the importance of participating in clinical trials. The author examines BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations, criteria for risk assessment and when genetic testing and counseling is appropriate. Other genes that are known to carry breast cancer risk are summarized in a clear table. Included is information on prophylactic mastectomies for high risk individuals and surveillance for people who are gene-positive but living without a diagnosis. Research has shown that patients who improve physical fitness before starting therapy actually handle treatment better and recover faster. This chapter includes information on risk factors for breast cancer (non-modifiable and modifiable), summarizes recent research on obesity and breast cancer risk and physical activity and cancer risk. Dr. Link presents approaches to eating a nutritious and healthy diet and addresses common supplements and alcohol consumption. One of the most valuable sections in this chapter focuses on how to create a healthy lifestyle plan. He states, “You are in control. And that can take you out of the patient mode and put you into active participant mode.” (p.143) This information empowers readers with an understanding of their specific type of breast cancer, possible treatment options and the risks and the benefits of treatment decisions. Such a foundation will support individuals with having a more informed discussion with their breast oncologist, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist and treatment team. Dr. Link’s tone is refreshingly optimistic about contemporary treatment options due to developments in genomic testing and tailored therapies. As technological and scientific progress continues, we are on the cusp of even more promising methods to detect, cure and treat this disease. I highly recommend this book for anyone newly diagnosed with breast cancer. I also recommend this book to spouses, partners and loved ones seeking to better understand the nature of the disease. Most of all, this indispensible manual will support people to become their own best advocate in their care. I would suggest this book to anyone recently diagnosed as well as family members. In the beginning people have a lot of questions that you may not know how to answer. This would be a great book to share with friends and family during that time. I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. All thoughts are my own. For me, it was post surgical and had my pathology report but before addition therapies ( radiation, anti-estrogen). I think happened to be the best time ( for me) to read the book. Being based on the American health system means it doesn't all apply in same way as in UK. Donating it to my hospital. Book explains how stage is determined. I read the 2nd edition and will be reading the 4th edition to see if there are changes in the chapters on chemo and tamoxifen. It helped immensely. It gives an exceptional explanation of what to expect and advice for the unexpected. It was particularly helpful for my parents and greatly put their minds at ease through the months of treatment and recovery. John Link will forever be a part of me. I highly recommend his books for anyone who is, or knows someone who is, battling this silent killer. He also presents it in a step by step plan of action format which follows the process of being diagnosed to making all the relevant decisions concerning the procedure and treatment. I feel very empowered and equipped to discuss with my doctors now that I understand the many nuances of navigating breast cancer. It helped me immensely. Thanks Dr. Link!
