I used it in manual mode for gigs, and I switched from using Vst amps sims on the PC, to using the GT10 directly into my Emu 1616m audio Interface. My sound Improved a lot.Plugging into and interface using the preamps. Yes the Dual screen makes it easier in the programming side of things. The problem is you have to go into the menu for everything. I got used to reaching over and turning on and off delay compression etc on the GT10 (in desktop mode) so in fact its more confusing and time consuming for me. In a lot of youtube video comparisons the GT100 sounded very Muddy even Honky to me. I found this true of the unit in my experience. I did not like any of the preamps. My tele sounded Ok, the strat was just OK, but none of the Amps liked my Les Paul. I like my shimmering clean strat sound and hi-gain humbucker drop D downpicking riffs. I could achieve neither. I know people who swear by the sensitivity of the vintage amps with old vintage guitars. If i was gigging more than recording, I would use this (for the improved manual mode) but for studio versatility I will stick to my GT10. I hope this review helps anybody who found themselves in the same position as I was a few weeks ago. Personally I prefer my GT10, but thats just me. Finally, one more thing. The tones are clear, very rich in texture and depth, more than what you would expect from a floor unit like this. So having some knowledge on how to tweak a pedal, amp, EQ a bit will come in handy for sure. Overall opinion: The thing's amazing. Tones are good, it's literally built like a tank.I see this as being usable both in-studio and live without any problems. But you do need to set it up right or else you might get not get the best tones out of it. Also my sound engineer loves it. NOTE: Be prepared to spend some time to get to know the unit. I've had GT6 for a long time and it was great, but this is light years away. Dual displays make it easy to see everything. Easy to surf through the menus, everything intuitive. Within seconds you can go and set your tone up to your liking. Effect chain is totally flexible and effects can be placed anywhere. I use this in 4 cable method and it is excellent in this mode. Effects before my preamp, whatever I want. Effects after my preamp, whatever I want. Don't want my preamp. No problem - I can use simulated preamp within GT100. Effect list is endless. Unlike GT6, FX1 and FX2 have same options. For example, set both FX1 and FX2 to harmonizer with two voices. Crazy! This processor really surprised me and went beyond my expectations. Only minor downside is tone coloring. It does color the tone in 4 cable method, no matter what global setting is used. So equalizer effect should be used to balance this. From what I see on the internet, it seems that most competitors suffer the same. GT6 was not up to my liking. BR80 based on GT10 did not have what I needed. GT100 as well. All of those do not have good crunch or distortion for my ear. It is not responsive and dynamic as it should be, it sounds cheap in all those products. I couldn't put my finger on it until I recently got VOX Tonelab ST. It's not mind blowing and it has it's faults, but that little VOX is way ahead COSM models. Dynamic and organic playing way above COSM models - for crunch and higher gain also. I don't know about other Tonelab units, but ST does the job way better. Note that cleans are good in COSM world, it is just that driven stuff sounds cheap. So if you're after fine art of dynamic playing and your ears are refining through the years, do not go for this unit. This unit can only give you excellent and mind blowing effects, combinations, routings, user intuitiveness, and robustness that is hardly available elsewhere for this price. If you plan to use it that way, keep in mind of tone coloring I mentioned in my original review. For all others that are mostly high gain shredders - this unit will satisfy you. Though I see that even some high gain shredders don't like what they hear from COSM models, just like me. So if your ears are starting to hear something you don't like then pay attention. Do your homework and search for something else. Youtube can come handy but also sometimes misleading because people leave poor recordings. Day by day, you might find you need more money to satisfy the need, but that's what usually happens when sensitivity grows in you. The unit is built to a very high standard with quality switches and controls on a metal deck with a plastic back. The unit uses 4 x aa batteries or a boss power adapter. Highly recommended for either the amateur or even pro guitar player.I also bought a cheap 2 button toggle pedal to allow me to have 2 CTL switches and a tap tempo on the delay. Out the box it sounded a bit harsh on my trace acoustic amp but with some tweaks to the master EQ it sprang into life. Delays are nice and varied. Reverbs are OK, would have liked to have been able to have the reverb as loud as the dry signal for some volume swell effects. The acoustic processor brings some nice tonal adjustments and with the right tweaks, it makes your guitar sing. Programing on the unit is straightforward if you are used to these kinds of units and you can also assign the 3 rotary knobs to almost ant effect parameter for live tweaking. The chorus is also very nice, which is expected from a boss unit. The other modulation effects all sound fantastic, particularly the rotary speaker. The editing software for the PC is very user friendly and is great for learning all the tweaks you can apply using the assignments. Build wise it ferls quite sturdy and it should be able to last a good few years of playing. Overall I'd say this is a great wee unit, but the 2 extra toggle pedals are a must to unleash its full potential. If you are looking for a budget multi effects but not a budget sound, this has it in spades.Only problem I had was installing the software I had to do a bit of research to get it the computer to recognise my device and had to install additional software to make it work. I like the fact you can save patches to live sets using the software which once you get it installed is very easy to use just look up some videos its more clearer than the manual which doesn't cover enough to get you up and running. I been playing guitar for years and this is the best buy yet. Many immediately useable patches built in (unlike many units which seem to have loads of patches there just to show off the extremes of the unit rather than supplying real world useable patches). As I said only had it a couple of days but it's looking like a great unit at a very reasonable price. The Version 2.0 update integrates BOSS’ very latest technologies into the GT-100 for enhanced performance while playing live and recording in the studio. The update also brings BOSS’ innovative Multi-Dimensional Processing (MDP) technology to the GT-100 courtesy of Tera Echo, Overtone, and A-DIST effects. In addition, Rotary 2 and Acoustic Guitar Simulator effects types have been added as options in the FX1 and FX2 categories. You’re now able to capture both processed and unprocessed tones at the same time on separate tracks in your DAW. You can also re-amp dry tracks back through the GT-100 while simultaneously listening to your audio mix through USB, making it easy to tweak parameters to achieve the perfect tones for your songs. Powered by newly developed BOSS technology, guitar-to-MIDI conversion works with Roland’s free Guitar Friend Jam software, and also lets you experiment with using your guitar to create MIDI sequences in music production software. The update will be quick and easy to install from a computer via USB. Our guitar player just started using the GT-100 in practice. I noticed that when he pedal selects to a different “sound”, the GT-100 output signal level can change dramatically. What I am trying to prevent is having to constantly adjust the mixer because his signal level changes every time he changes. What do anybody recommend? It is possible to preprogram the output volume of each patch so you don’t have to ride the faders every time a patch is changed. Here is how to do it: 1. Press EFFECTS 2. Turn knob 4 to select MST (master) 3. Turn knob 5 to adjust the output of the patch Any ideas? There could be several issues here. Try logging on as an administrator, or right click to start the program as administrator; sometimes Windows only lets certain programs connect, while other are not allowed unless permission as the admin is given. It is also possible that some other app is interfering, so try turning off any other app running that might want to connect to the internet. I am aware that I can always make my own but I like the factory patch’s just fine. I use the 4 cable method. However, the Adjust parameter only seems to work in Direct Mix or Branch Out modes, not Normal mode as claimed; in Normal mode I hear no difference at all, which is where I needed it most. I definitely hear it in the other modes but can’t use them as that just introduces clean bypassed signal along with the preamp distortion I’m using in the amp itself. You can adjust this if the MODE parameter is set to NORMAL or DIRECT MIX. It’s working. (and I’ve seen the video before) The problem is that the 4 cable method doesn’t work well with parallel effects loops, it works best with serial effects loops, and there’s really nothing that can be about it without a phase adjustment in the effects one is using. This is why I got excited about the update for the GT-100; the problem is, it doesn’t seem to work. I hear no difference in normal mode. Believe me, I tried really hard. We have tested the GT-100 v2 tuner function here and did not have the same experience. Does your unit do this when the poly tuner is off (Mode is set to Metronome). In case there is an input level issue, you might try adjusting the input level in the SYSTEM settings. I love the A-Dist FX, it gives me a Ritchie Blackmore kind of tone out of my strat, and a very Marshall tone overall, with clarity. I like it better than any of the COSM models, actually.
