The PV1000’s bass unit is built in Boston’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Peabody, Massachusetts.Make sure your subwoofer and receiver are unplugged when making the connections. Unfortunately, I did not find this to be the case. It could not pick up that NPR station at all and I sent it right back. The Boston Acoustics Receptor performs far better. The reception is outstanding and I can pick up that station with no problem. As others have noted, the audio quality is also superb; I do not find the amount of bass a problem at all. I just have a few minor complaints. First, the display is small, as others have noted, and I have a lot trouble reading it from less than two feet away without grabbing my glasses or squinting severely. Also, the time must be set manually. Not a big deal, but when so many far less expensive competitors do this automatically, it makes this product appear a bit dated. Finally, the battery backup isn't quite right. The specs published by Amazon are not correct--they say that it uses AAA batteries. In fact, they have been replaced by an internal, hopefully permanent battery (which is not mentioned at all in the manual). I did a quick 15-minute test, and the radio maintained its time, preset, and alarm time settings. However, it did NOT retain the alarm activation state. Even though the two alarms were both activated when I unplugged, they were switched off when I plugged the radio back in. Since the radio retains all of its other settings, I have to believe this is a design oversight, and a rather significant one. Using the supplied antennas the radio performed very well, connected to a high quality external FM antenna the reception was moderately improved (however the supplied antenna worked quite well). An external AM antenna didn't improve beyond the internal AM antenna capability (which picked up all the major stations I wanted). The Boston does the same but only for the alarm buzzer, reaching full volume in about 15 seconds. The music alarm comes on at the setting of the volume control, with no ramping-up. But that's a nit, I think. My real love is the warm, rich sound that comes out of the really small case. Even at low volume the sound is rich and full. It's hard to believe this small box and speaker can produce sound that good. I suspect the goodness of the sound is in part due to the tuned port at the rear of the radio. Still in all, it's much better than I expected and a nice surprise. We attached an external FM antenna by Terk that plugs right into the back of the radio (coax plug) that really helps pull in the FM stations. AM reception is lousy, probably because of where the clock-radio is placed in the bedroom -- but we didn't buy it for the AM band. In order to really hear talk or appreciate vocals, I need to crank it high enough so the bass could disturb those in next apartment, especially early in the morning when I typically use a clock radio. On the plus side, at higher volumes the sound IS exceptionally rich. Controls are well thought out and easy to use (I really love having two presets for wakeup time). Reception is good. After some searching on the Amazon site, I came across the Boston Acoustics Receptor,and decided to give it a try. I've been very happy with it. The sound quality is somewhere between that of a stereo system and a typical clock radio--quite pleasant for music or voice. This is impressive given the small footprint of the unit. The FM reception is excellent and very stable. Perhaps the strongest point of the Receptor is its well-designed user interface. The use of the knob to adjust the time or station is a particularly good idea and works well. It is clear that a lot of thought went into the design of all the features. 0 out of 5 stars The Sony had poor sound quality, was so hard to tune that we left it on one station all the time, and the control buttons were so poorly placed that my mother-in-law kept accidentally turning on the alarm when she tried to turn the radio off, thus waking us up at midnight. In comparison, the BA Receptor is a dream (no pun intended). My wife and I compared it to a Tivoli Model 1 at a Super Target. I thought the sound from the two radios was comparable, but I wanted digital tuning with presets and my wife wanted a clock on the radio. She only hesitated because the display Receptor showed the time only when the radio was off. However, on downloading the manual I discovered that the default display could be changed merely by pressing the Display button for three seconds. (Some owners seem not to have discovered this.) That removed our only objection, and I immediately ordered one from Amazon. After she heard our first Receptor, my wife ordered a second one for the bedroom. Now we easily switch between stations as the mood strikes us and get perfect reception each time. Pros: The sound is amazing for such a small speaker. The controls are intelligently designed and easy to operate. The appearance is attractive. The auxiliary input (since 2005) lets me use it as an external mono speaker for my Sansa MP3 player when I want to listen to my own music. It also lacks a headphone jack. Also, the first time I plugged in my MP3 player, I had trouble removing the plug from the auxiliary input jack. It took so much force I was worried I might break something. This might have been a case of a batch of jacks being a little out of spec, and other Receptors might not have the same problem. I fixed the problem by buying a right-angle adapter at Radio Shack that I touched up with a file. Overall, it is slightly heavy on the bass, but this makes the music sound fuller when listening at lower volumes. You cannot adjust the bass, so if you plan on using this more as a radio than an alarm clock this may be an issue for you. The alarm clock aspect of this radio is very good. The instructions are crystal clear and even a little self-deprecating--an engineer with a sense of humor. There are two power switches, one on top and one on the front, which is nice in a radio you might operate from a standing, sitting or lying position.
